Nick and Victoria Howard are the current custodians, living on the estate and running it as both home and business. They are the latest generation of a line at Castle Howard since 1699, when Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle, commissioned John Vanbrugh — a playwright who had never designed a building — to raise a baroque palace on the Henderskelfe hilltop. Vanbrugh, backed by Nicholas Hawksmoor’s actual architectural competence, produced one of the most audacious first works in architectural history, crowned by the first major dome on an English private house.

What “still a family home” means for your visit

It means the house is alive rather than embalmed. Rooms shift use, exhibitions change, restoration is ongoing — most famously the long recovery from the 1940 fire that gutted the dome and twenty rooms, a rebuilding project the family has pursued for eight decades and counting.
